Find the format and the innings

Before reading any individual figure, identify the competition, format and innings. A first-class match can give each side two innings. A limited-overs match normally gives each side one. A total that looks small in isolation might be part of a useful overall lead in a multi-innings game.

Read the result line as well. A win, draw, tie and no result are not interchangeable. In particular, a draw in time-limited multi-innings cricket does not mean the scores finished level. The teams may simply have run out of playing time without completing a winning result.

Overs notation is not a decimal

An over contains six valid balls. Wides and no-balls do not count among those six. In a notation-only example, 12.4 overs means twelve completed overs and four valid balls: 76 valid balls in total. It does not mean twelve and four-tenths overs. This is an explanation of notation, not a reported match figure.

That distinction matters when calculating rates. Convert completed overs and remaining balls into valid deliveries first. Dividing by the displayed decimal would produce the wrong answer. A scorecard may also show more physical deliveries than valid balls because an over contained extras.

When a match is interrupted, check the revised allocation and any official target adjustment. The original innings length may no longer describe the task facing the chasing side.

Read the batting line with the dismissal

Runs tell you the contribution. Balls faced help show tempo. Fours and sixes show part of the scoring pattern, but not the quality of every decision. Strike rate is runs per hundred balls faced. It is a rate, not a percentage chance of success.

The dismissal entry adds essential information. “c” identifies a catch, “b” identifies the bowler and “lbw” means leg before wicket. A run-out is not credited as a wicket to the bowler. “Not out” means the batter’s innings ended without a dismissal; it does not tell you why the team innings finished.

Batting average divides runs by dismissals, not by appearances or innings played. Not-outs therefore affect the denominator. For a player with no dismissals in the set being examined, do not force a normal numerical average. A short sequence of innings is limited evidence whatever the displayed rate suggests.

Separate team runs from bowling runs

A bowling line usually lists overs, maidens, runs conceded and wickets. Economy rate expresses runs conceded per over. Bowling average is runs conceded per wicket; bowling strike rate is valid balls delivered per wicket. They answer different questions about cost and frequency.

Byes and leg-byes add to the team total but are not charged to the bowler. Wides and no-ball penalties are generally charged to the bowler. Penalty-run situations can add further accounting detail, so use the official scorecard rather than assuming every difference is an error.

A maiden is an over in which no runs are charged to the bowler. That is why a team total can change through byes or leg-byes without necessarily spoiling a maiden. Also remember that the sum of bowlers’ wickets need not equal the team’s wickets lost, because some dismissals are not credited to a bowler.

Find the turning point without inventing one

Fall-of-wickets entries show when partnerships ended. They can reveal a cluster of dismissals, but they cannot prove that every dismissal came from poor batting. Use a reliable report or footage for the delivery-level explanation. A scorecard is a record, not a complete replay.

In a chase, combine runs needed, valid balls remaining and wickets available. In first-class cricket, add the overall lead or deficit and time left. Compare players with similar roles and match situations before making a judgement about who performed better.
